Independent creator guide / Made on YouTube 2026

Dynamic thumbnails, explained.

YouTube dynamic thumbnails are an announced feature that recommends the best of three thumbnail options to different segments of a video's audience. YouTube showed the feature inside Ask Studio in September 2026. Unlike its existing A/B test, which selects one winner for everyone, dynamic thumbnails aim to match an option to a viewer group.[1][3]

The announced goal is a better match for each audience segment. Your job is to give it real options.

02 / The announcement

How do YouTube dynamic thumbnails work?

YouTube says it will recommend the best of three thumbnail options to different audience segments. The feature appeared in its Ask Studio presentation at Made on YouTube on September 23, 2026.[1]

A subscriber who recognizes a face may respond to a different visual idea than a new viewer looking for a concrete result. That is an illustration of a creative reason to make distinct options, not a description of YouTube's targeting rules.

What YouTube has not published yet

YouTube has not specified a rollout date, what decides the option shown to a segment, whether creators supply the three options or YouTube generates them, or whether dynamic thumbnails will include Shorts. Do not assume the existing A/B test rules carry over.[1] Get the update by email when the mechanics are clearer.

03 / Two different jobs

Dynamic thumbnails vs A/B testing

The new announcement describes matching options to audience segments. YouTube Test and Compare measures options in a test, then shows one winner to everyone.[1][3]

QuestionDynamic thumbnailsYouTube thumbnail A/B testing
What it doesRecommends among three options to different audience segments.[1]Tests up to three titles, thumbnails, or title and thumbnail pairs concurrently.[3]
What happens after selectionThe per-segment behavior is described; long-term display rules are unpublished.[1]One option wins by watch time share and is shown to all viewers. A control group may remain outside the test.[3]
AvailabilityAnnounced. YouTube has not published a rollout date or eligibility rules.[1]Available in YouTube Studio on desktop with advanced features. Shorts, made for kids, private, and mature videos are excluded.[3]
Timing and metricNeither a duration nor the selection metric has been announced.[1]Usually a few days, up to two weeks. Watch time share determines a clear winner rather than click-through rate alone.[3]

Already using Test and Compare? Start with an older video to limit the impact of weaker options, and make the versions meaningfully different. YouTube says overly similar tests can run longer or fail to produce a clear winner.[3]

Want to run a test now? Our guide to A/B testing YouTube thumbnails walks through setup, results, and ways to make your three options meaningfully different.

04 / How we got here

The thumbnail testing timeline

  1. YouTube announced early thumbnail Test and Compare work.[8]

  2. Thumbnail testing reached broad release; YouTube calls 2024 its official launch year.[1]

  3. YouTube announced title testing alongside thumbnail testing.[7]

  4. Ask Studio thumbnail generation for long-form videos and fully custom Shorts thumbnail uploads began rolling out. Partner Program creators were first for the Shorts upload feature.[5]

  5. Dynamic thumbnails and video A/B testing were announced at Made on YouTube. YouTube reported more than 40 million title and thumbnail experiments since the official 2024 launch.[1]

  6. TechCrunch reports that testing three cuts of Shorts is planned from 2027. YouTube's announcement does not give that date, so treat it as a reported plan.[9][1]

07 / Build the package

Make your thumbnail options with our studio

Ask Studio thumbnails can draw on a video's transcript and a channel's existing style.[4][5] Start with the creative decision: which distinct Face, Proof, and Promise ideas should represent this video?

Build the whole video around the promise

When customThumbnails.com designs the package and customEditing.com cuts the video, the designer and editor can see each other's work and the Brand Guide. customDFY.com can handle strategy, thumbnails, editing, and uploads if you want the channel managed end to end.[10]

customTranscripts.com supplies transcripts for your own production workflow. For platform context, Ask Studio thumbnail generation arrived for long-form videos in July 2026; YouTube's current Help page lists Ask Studio on desktop web.[5][6]

08 / Existing videos

Refresh old YouTube thumbnails

Your older videos deserve a fresh creative brief. Find one with a durable topic and an underpowered first impression, then make new Face, Proof, and Promise options with customThumbnails.ai or customThumbnails.com.

Test the new package on an eligible older upload and keep a record of what changed. YouTube recommends starting A/B tests on older videos to reduce the impact of weaker options.[3]

YouTube has also announced that Ask Studio can suggest and test refreshed thumbnails in the background. TechCrunch reports that autonomous monitoring requires the creator's permission.[1][9]

A useful review order

  1. Find an older video with a clear audience and durable topic.
  2. Read its retention and traffic context before changing the package.
  3. Brief distinct thumbnail concepts, then test where eligible.
  4. Record the result and revisit later.

channelOS helps organize strategy and insights, and its briefs can route into the thumbnail queue.[10]

09 / The opening matters

Video A/B testing: how to test your hooks

YouTube announced testing up to three cuts of a video. One official post calls it “coming soon”; another says creators “can now” use it. That mixed wording supports describing it as announced and rolling out, with availability to check in your own Studio.[1][2]

Our planning rule

Every cut should pay off every thumbnail.

If these tools are used together, design each opening so it quickly honors the promise of each thumbnail concept. YouTube has not published how the two features interact, so this is a robust creative standard rather than a confirmed routing rule.

Make the openings meaningfully different

For the same fictional lamp restoration video, try a Face hook that opens on the creator's reaction, a Proof hook that reveals the glowing result before rewinding, and a Promise hook that states what the viewer will learn. Each version must reach the same story and satisfy each thumbnail's claim.

Our test design advice is to keep the rest of the video identical. Change only the opening, roughly its first 30 to 60 seconds. Film the alternate openings on shoot day, keep their lengths close, and use clear file names. Those are production recommendations, not YouTube requirements.

Read results with care

Review the audience retention report and log what each opening tried, the video's audience, and what happened. Build a repeatable playbook, not a universal rule from one result.

YouTube has not confirmed the winner metric for video tests. Watch time is a reasonable guess because title and thumbnail tests use watch time share, but do not treat it as the video test's published rule.[3][1]

customEditing.com edits the alternate cuts while keeping everything after the opening aligned.

TechCrunch reports that testing three cuts of Shorts begins in 2027. The current title and thumbnail A/B test still excludes Shorts; neither statement proves that dynamic thumbnails will support Shorts.[9][3]

10 / Beyond thumbnails

What else Made on YouTube 2026 means

Outlier videos

New Insights and Research destinations in Studio help creators identify unusually strong videos and find ideas for what to make next.[1] channelOS gives your channel a strategy and insights layer.

Custom Feeds

YouTube says viewers will soon be able to build saved homepage feeds from conversational prompts. That creates another reason to make a video's topic and payoff clear in its package.[2] customDFY.com can handle channel strategy, thumbnails, editing, and uploads.

Shorts Series

YouTube says Shorts can now be organized into seasons and episodes.[2] customClipping.com cuts short clips from long-form videos for your series plan.

Shorts thumbnails today

The July announcement offered custom uploads first to Partner Program creators. YouTube's current Help page says verified accounts can upload a custom Shorts thumbnail in Studio on a computer and recommends 9:16. Its A/B test Help page still excludes Shorts.[5][4][3]

The volume behind these changes is substantial: YouTube says more than 20 million videos are uploaded daily, and its cited research says 72% of U.S. video posters ages 14 to 44 used AI to create or edit in the previous year.[2][1] Neither figure predicts performance for an individual channel.

11 / Put it to work

YouTube thumbnail best practices for 2026

A short checklist for packaging a video and learning from it. The creative steps are our recommendations; eligibility and image specifications come from YouTube's Help pages.[3][4]

  • Write the one sentence promise of the video before designing.
  • Sketch Face, Proof, and Promise as three distinct visual ideas.
  • Check that every idea is truthful and readable at a small size.
  • Export high-resolution, 16:9 JPG or PNG files for ordinary video thumbnails.[4]
  • Use Studio's current A/B test where eligible; start with an older video.[3]
  • For video cuts, plan alternate openings while filming and keep the body consistent.
  • Check retention and test reports, then record the concept and outcome.
  • Revisit this guide as YouTube publishes dynamic thumbnail mechanics.

About Justin Evans

Justin Evans made about 2,000 daily family vlogs over three years without growing the channel. In 2014 he began filming action figures on a kitchen table, and EpicToyChannel grew organically to more than 2 million subscribers and 1.3 billion lifetime views. That experience shaped his focus on packaging: the thumbnail is the first invitation to watch.[10]

Justin Evans has more than 15 years of brand creative work for Disney/Pixar, Nintendo, Xbox, Mattel, Hasbro, Nickelodeon, DreamWorks TV, Amazon, and Walmart. He founded customThumbnails.com and customThumbnails.ai. He also brings creators together through customMastermind.com / LegacyLab.[10]

Dynamic thumbnails FAQ

What are dynamic thumbnails on YouTube?

YouTube describes dynamic thumbnails as a feature that recommends the best of three thumbnail options to different audience segments. It showed the feature inside Ask Studio at Made on YouTube 2026.

Source [1]

How many thumbnails can I use?

YouTube's dynamic thumbnail announcement refers to three options. Its existing title and thumbnail A/B test also accepts up to three options, but YouTube has not explained who supplies the dynamic options.

Source [1] Source [3]

Is it the same as A/B testing?

No. Dynamic thumbnails are described as recommendations for audience segments, while the current A/B test finds one winner by watch time share and shows it to all viewers.

Source [1] Source [3]

When is it available?

YouTube announced dynamic thumbnails in September 2026 but has not published a rollout date or eligibility rules. Check YouTube Studio and this guide for updates.

Source [1]

Does it work on Shorts?

YouTube has not said whether dynamic thumbnails include Shorts. Its existing title and thumbnail A/B test does not work on Shorts, although verified creators can upload a custom Shorts thumbnail on desktop.

Source [1] Source [3] Source [4]

Should my three thumbnails be different?

Yes, give each option a distinct reason to click, such as emotion, visible proof, or a clear promise. YouTube says options that are too similar can make its existing A/B test run longer or fail to find a clear winner.

Source [3]

Can AI make my variants?

Yes, customThumbnails.ai can create variants using your reference photos and Brand Guide, with included revisions within plan limits. Describe your video and request different concepts in plain language; YouTube has not said how options will enter the dynamic feature.
